India to recharge bid for UN Security Council Seat
This article was an interesting look into the political power that India is looking towards in the future. Other G4 countries are now supporting India’s bid for the non-permanent seat on the Security Council, which is also being seen as support for Security Council reforms that India is proposing. If elected, India will start its position on the Security Council on January 1, 2011, which will be the first time in 19 years that they held the seat.
While reading this article, I found it very impressive that India had such the support it did in reforming the Security Council. However I felt like the specific changes that they were looking for were not clear, nor if the change in the makeup of the Security Council would include a permanent position for India. The importance that the article placed on winning the non-permanent seat was interesting and I found myself wondering how many Americans knew or would want to know that the US has always had a permanent seat on the Council. I would also like to really understand what policies India wants to really focus on while in the non-permanent position.
